Today, all drones have 4K cameras (even $200 drones from Amazon). In reality, the 4K cameras on most drones such as the DJI Phantom 3 & 4 are no better than the cameras on a cell phone. Sure, cell phone video looks good on a phone. But when you compare the video quality of cell phone video to that of a professional 4k camera with a large digital sensor and high optical quality interchangeable lenses, the difference is night and day. Don’t be fooled when a drone company says, “We have a 4K camera…” As a buyer, you have to ask more questions.

Dream Chaser Aerials researched the cameras on “consumer” level drones (example DJI Phantom class drones) early in our company’s history. We found the cameras on these drones to be 100% inadequate for professional use. First, the aperture on these camera is fixed at F2.8 giving no flexibility over the depth of field (area in focus) of a shot. Also, the shutter speed cannot on these cameras be changed (just like a cell phone). So the camera uses the ISO to control the exposure. Using the ISO to control the exposure on any camera (consumer, prosumer or professional) is the worst way to control the exposure because the image quality will degrade very quickly at higher ISO ranges. Further, the cameras on “consumer” level drones

The digital sensor on the camera used on the Dream Copter 4K, our aerial photo/video platform, has 8 times (8X) the resolution of most drones flying today. In fact, the cameras on most drones today have the same quality of a cell phone. The camera on the Dream Copter 4K uses interchangeable lenses giving incredible flexibility during the creative process.
